Let Freedom Ring!
I never thought I would live to see the day that an African-American man would be a major party candidate for President of the United States. We’ve come a long way Baby! Not only is an African-American running for president but he campaigned against a woman! When Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton announced their respective plans I watched in awe. Even though I liked both candidates, in my heart of hearts I didn’t think they would ever make it to serious candidate status. As the months dragged on I realized they were both serious candidates and when the smoke cleared, whoever was nominated would become a new page in the U-S history books. Althought Obama will be the one to lead the charge to the White House for the Democrats, he and Hillary have given hope to the masses and to children in classrooms all over America who now know that they too could have the opportunity to run for president someday.
However, I am not without fear for the future. I think these next months leading up to the election are going to be brutal. As much as we say we want change it is often in our nature to resist it and that resistance has the potential to get ugly in ways many of us have not seen in our lifetime. I pray and hope and try to have faith that some of the deep-seated hate and fear long hidden behind closed doors will be replaced by knowledge and courage and not acted upon with rage and violence. We must replace ignorance with tolerance, only then can we as a people truly be free.
